Sacramento authorities are examining a violent incident that broke out Saturday night April 18 at the Howe Community Park area at the time Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were shutting down an unsanctioned gathering of multiple hundreds of people.
Background
Officers from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office were first called to the park on Howe Avenue just after 6:30 Saturday evening after getting calls of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Soon after, a follow-up call was made mentioning an alleged brawl breaking out within the park grounds.
Aerial units flew over the park but could not confirm any ongoing fight. However, authorities discovered that several hundred click here individuals had gathered without authorization without permission.
The Shooting Itself
Officers set about removing people from the park by setting up around the park's perimeter and using their vehicle PA systems directing the hundreds present to disperse at once. Approximately 15 minutes were provided for people to comply.
As the crowd was being cleared that 20 to 25 gunshots echoed through the night. The shots sent hundreds fleeing. Responding personnel swiftly started identifying shooting victims.
Four Gunshot Victims
In total, four shooting victims were located with gunshot injuries. The four individuals — including a female and three males all believed to be in their 20s — were brought to area medical facilities. Medical teams reported that two were treated for serious injuries, one person had injuries of a moderate nature, and one victim's wounds were minor. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District arrived on scene and provided medical assistance those with gunshot wounds at the park.
What Investigators Found
Most of the gunfire was confirmed to have been concentrated on the Cottage Way corridor close to the Home Depot located at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Investigators located more spent casings scattered along Cottage Way. Bullet holes were identified in the iron perimeter fence bordering the Home Depot. These discoveries showed that at least one shooter had been discharging rounds toward the south from the Cottage Way area targeting the Home Depot. The store itself was locked down as a precaution. CSI investigators and detectives worked tirelessly late into the evening.
Suspect Vehicle Located
Details gathered through scanner monitoring showed that a Kia had been detained in nearby Solano County. Four individuals were held for questioning. Law enforcement units were dispatched to Solano County to return them to Sacramento for further questioning. Surveillance footage made clear that two shooters had been involved.
